Chief Engineering Officer

The Chief Engineer is effectively the ship’s technical manager and is responsible for the operation and upkeep of all machinery and engineering systems as well as the structural integrity of the ship.

Key tasks:

• Plans work schedule for the engine room.
• Undertakes bunker calculations.
• Handles engine during critical periods.
• Submits reports to the Master.
• In charge of the engine during any emergency.

Entry requirements/training:

The Chief Engineer holds Engine Class – I Certificate (Unlimited/Foreign going). (See the section on education and training at the end of this chapter.)
