The national Maritime Awareness Programme is aimed at positioning South Africa to become “Africa’s Premier Maritime Nation as well as Careers and Employment Hub”. This vision will be achieved through activation of long term out-reach initiatives to support creating an inclusive maritime culture, awareness of the opportunities and skills development for the sector.
The expo is targeted at creating interest and sustaining awareness to school learners, university students, unemployed youth and the community in all aspects of the maritime sector, leading them to seek out careers and employment opportunities in the sector.
The South African International Maritime Institute was founded in 2014 to support and coordinate skills development for the nation’s maritime sector. It is funded by the Department of Higher Education, Science and Technology through the National Skills Fund.
